Starfield might be getting its Cyberpunk 2077 moment following a tease of a major content update potentially on the way.

The launch of Cyberpunk 2077 was so bad in 2020 on last-gen consoles that Sony pulled it from sale on the PlayStation Store, refunded all orders, and wasn't allowed to return until it was in a much better state. That hiatus lasted six-long months.

In defence of Cyberpunk 2077 (to an extent), it had garnered so much pre-launch hype that it was practically impossible to meet most expectations. Today, following a wealth of content updates from CD Projekt RED, I believe that it’s amongst the best sci-fi RPGs of all time.

Cyberpunk 2077 and Starfield Share a Common Bond

One other sci-fi RPG that had a bit of a rocky launch and garnered a ton of pre-launch hype was Bethesda’s Starfield, a game initially described by many as “Skyrim in Space”.

Don’t get me wrong, Starfield wasn't great at launch, and it was nowhere near the state of Cyberpunk 2077, but if it had a school report card, it might read “Could do better”.

Starfield had its fair share of Bethesda bugs, poor framerate performance, a clunky UI, and not being able to traverse on planets with a land vehicle felt very lacking. Thankfully, much like CDPR, the folks at Bethesda worked tirelessly to improve the game with content updates, and Starfield is a much better game now than it was in 2022.

However, according to Jez Corden of Windows Central, Bethesda is not done improving Starfield, and it could be getting major upgrades for its Creation engine.

Starfield Could Be Getting Another Major Update

“News: Starfield's upcoming update represents a lot of technological upgrades for Bethesda's Creation Engine,” shared Redditor GdSmth, kicking off the discussion on the thread.

Details on how the Creation Engine will be improved and what the exact update for Starfield is being kept under wraps at this time. Still, it could have big implications on other upcoming Bethesda titles, such as The Elder Scrolls VI, and perhaps even the rumoured Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas remasters.

“I do wonder how much cut gameplay mechanics were taken out before release, and if any of them are going to be completed/reimplemented into the game if this big update is true,” replied MCdemonkid1230.

“Well, when the game originally came out, it did have traces of ray tracing, which were removed after the first couple of patches. Maybe even a better lighting system to help with the horrible lighting shadows that can occur outdoors at times,” suggested Electrical_Art6800.

“Exciting stuff for sure, but also upsetting in a way. Makes it seem like this update isn't coming very soon at all. Still this year I'm sure, but when?” exclaimed StinkyBob1337.

It’s, of course, worth taking all unconfirmed rumours with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise. That being said, if Starfield is to get another major update, it wouldn't surprise me if it arrives with the highly expected PlayStation 5 port. After all, it would be an ideal time to rekindle interest.

We’ll update you once we learn more. For now, at least, Starfield is out on PC and Xbox Series X/S. It’s also included with an Xbox Game Pass subscription.
