Steam is packed full of so many top-quality games that many will go unnoticed and one of its biggest games is getting a huge free download.

The game in question is developed by indie studio Bay 12 Games and it’s the strategy RPG on PC, Dwarf Fortress and it's about to get the major free Adventure Mode update. Adventure Mode brings a new story campaign to Dwarf Fortress and the developers say that it will have “limitless possibilities for player stories.”

In Adventure Mode, players can: “create a character and freely roam the rich simulated world they have made a home in during their Fortress Mode save or start fresh in a newly generated world.” What’s more, this update will make quality-of-life improvements to one of the most popular games on Steam.

One of the quality-of-life improvements to the Steam RPG is giving the characters of its world faces. Sure that may seem like a small detail, but it all contributes to player immersion. Furthermore, these won't be generic faces but instead will be designed by the Bay 12 Games artists which will reflect the character's description for added authenticity.

A new interface will also be implemented which aims to engage the player's conversations and form bonds with the NPCs of Dwarf Fortress like never before. The world map will also be improved with noticeable changes made to the roads, towns and homes bringing a fresh lick of paint to the popular RPG.

That is not all, because the combat will also benefit from a major revamp, both visually and mechanically with updated wrestling mechanics. “This will encourage players who may have in the past avoided grappling, to maybe look forward to a tussle,” reads a blog post on the Dwarf Fortress Steam page. “It will also spice up players' adventures out in the wild and another exciting layer of engagement with their world. Fight as an individual or control your whole party in tactical mode.”

Dwarf Fortress is out now digitally via Steam on PC. The free Adventure Mode update arrives in April 2024.
