A brand new demo for Sunken Sky has just been released on Steam, and it’s one for Hollow Knight fans to check out.

Hollow Knight and its sequel, Silksong, are two of the biggest and best indie games of all time, but for as much as I love them, I’m always keen to check out games from other developers that have been inspired by Team Cherry’s excellent metroidvanias.

Sunken Sky appears to be that, featuring metroidvania gameplay on a similar level to Hollow Knight’s 2D exploration, but with a much more vibrant art style.

If you're a PC gamer, you can now check out the demo for the game by heading to its Steam store page listing.

Unlike Hollow Knight’s dark underground caves, dimly lit hallways, and extravagant palaces, Sunken Sky takes place in an open world, where “no place is beyond your reach - from the tallest mountains to the very minds of others”.

The open world is very reminiscent of typical metroidvanias, where you explore a vast and interconnected world, climb hazardous mountains, investigate an enchanted forest, and find secrets hidden deep underground, all while fending off various monsters.

Sunken Sky also features JRPG elements in addition to its metroidvania gameplay, with optional minigames, levels, and other upgrades which helps your character grow stronger.

Sunken Sky Won't Give Hollow Knight A Run For Its Money, But It Should Appeal To Fans Of The Genre

Here’s the blurb on Sunken Sky: “Our kingdom was once engulfed in a never-ending conflict. We shook the very foundations of the world to end it, unaware of the consequences it would cause. Yet we had to move on. We had to rebuild. We had to forget.

“Join our unlikely protagonists in their adventure. Nameless girl seeking to traverse across the kingdoms. A survivor driven by guilt. A noble with too much to prove. Their paths will cross and, perhaps, so will their goals.

“Sunken Sky is a metroidvania mixed with a hefty dose of JRPG elements. It's a (mostly) lighthearted story of self-development, hope and discovery.”

If you’re interested in checking out Sunken Sky for yourself, be sure to head to the game’s official Steam page and download it for yourself.

As for when the actual game releases, Sunken Sky’s developer and publisher has it slated for March 2026, so it’s only a few more months until we get the full release.
