The best free game ever released on Steam is still going strong, and if my undying love for it won’t convince you, then the user review score definitely will.
I’m going to be very frank with you for a second: I expected to thoroughly hate this Steam game.
I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but when it comes to this one… that’s not exactly easy. There’s no way you’d catch me playing this game in public.
If you’re as terminally online as I am, you likely already know exactly which game I’m referring to: Umamusume: Pretty Derby, the free-to-play anime horse girl racing simulator on Steam, developed and published by Cygames Inc.

Look, man. I don’t know why this game has such a hold on me. It’s not the horse girls or the anime aesthetic, and I am extremely anti-gacha but good lord is this game hard to put down.
Thankfully, it would seem I'm in good company, because Umamusume: Pretty Derby is currently sitting at a 93% "Very Positive" score on Steam, with a whopping 20,000+ reviews.
“A fun management sim disguised as a gacha game”, writes Steam reviewer Blevs.
“However, unlike other gachas, I don't feel forced to spend money to have fun, awesome! Umamusume is so cool I wish horses were real.”

“My buddy told me about this game and it sounded so dumb. And it is. It's absurd. You train and race horse girls. I'm 10 hours in and I'm planning out generations of horse girl breeding to get the fastest and most powerful horse girl”, writes Steam user MomzSpaghetti.
“It's an absurd premise that covers a deep and strategic rogue-like sports management sim that has me yelling at an anime girl for running in front of my anime girl.”
I am certain that this is Northernlion’s fault. He made us think this was acceptable. He made us think this is OK.
I wish I could quit you, Umamusume: Pretty Derby.
