Steam’s latest free game, an anime styled title filled with girls posing as racehorses - yes, you read that right - is blowing up online thanks to avid fans, as well as streamers on Twitch.
Umamusume: Pretty Derby has been taking the world by storm, perhaps for its ridiculous premise, but also for its engaging gameplay.
An “immersive sports life simulation” this game has captivated many through its bright and colourful visuals, as well as the compelling story that runs throughout.
It probably helps that it’s filled with cute anime girls, and its gacha mechanics pull in those who want to focus on their favourite character.

At the time of writing, the game has a concurrent player base of just over 31k, and its peak in the last week reached well over 50k.
This is bolstered by those viewing the game on platforms such as Twitch and YouTube, where fans can watch streamers play the game, and root for their favourite horse girl.
Over on Steam, where the game is currently free-to-play, it’s sitting at a ‘Very Positive’ review score, with plenty of players giving their feedback.
One review hilariously notes, “You have a gambling addiction? On top of that, you're a degenerate? Congratz. You have a horse racing game with anime girls. What do else do you want me to tell you?”

“This game is cuter than it has any right to be,” says another Steam reviewer.
On the surface, Umamusume looks pretty and shallow, but once you delve, you’ll find a surprisingly engaging gameplay loop.
One reviewer points out, “For anyone who is resistant to the aesthetic of the game, I promise the gameplay is worth it.”
Of course, this is a gacha game, so it’s heavily monetised, but many players don’t believe that’s the focus, and enjoy the horse girls and their dramatic stories.

We’ll let you be the judge of that one.
