If you took the worldbuilding of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and the gameplay formula of Valheim and blended them together, you’d end up with something like Bread and Blood.

Developed by indie team ErasIt, Bread and Blood is an upcoming survival RPG set within medieval Europe.

Playings will “rise from a poor peasant to power - or die trying” in what looks to be a brutal but accessible experience.

“Survive, earn wealth, and carve your place in a brutal world where freedom comes at a cost,” the synopsis teases.

“Set in the dark Middle Ages, you are free to go wherever you wish and live however you choose — honest worker, struggling farmer, or ruthless bandit.”

In Bread and Blood, There Are Taxes To Pay For A Lowly Peasant

In order to survive, you’ll need to partake in all of the usual survival fare, including foraging, hunting, farming, trading, or perhaps even stealing and robbing if it comes to it.

You see, Bread and Blood requires you to pay your taxes, so you’re going to have to do it by any means necessary.

There are many taxes to contend with too.

Players will need to pay guards for protection from bandits, bandits so they don’t target you, the church “to avoid divine wrath”, and the local lord because he’s, well, the local lord and he demands it.

Video games so often place us within the shoes of the chosen one who can rise up to be this powerful saviour.

That’s not the case here. You’re just a lowly peasant.

You can pick from various trades to earn money, including butchery, cobbling, and craftsmanship.

The more you train at your craft, the more money you’ll earn as your skills improve.

Eventually, once you’ve gathered enough money, players can build a small base of their own.

“Build and upgrade your home, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Just remember… it still belongs to the lord. And yes, there are taxes,” devs warn.

Bread and Blood does not yet have a release date, but we do know that Steam is currently its only confirmed platform.

There, you can actually sample the game for free as Bread and Blood already has a demo available.

It’s not a very long demo, lasting for just around 15 minutes but I’ve seen some gameplay and it looks pretty entertaining.

You shouldn’t expect AAA polish; this is a small indie project. Animations could do with some improvements but on the whole, this is a neat little survival RPG worth keeping an eye on.

Head on over to PC storefront Steam now to give Bread and Blood a whirl.
