Steam users are absolutely loving this free game that has been taking the community by storm with its high new player count.
One of the many great aspects of indie gaming is the level of creative freedom that a developer can have, free from the shackles of a major publisher. These indie games can be as serious or bonkers as the creator chooses, and the kind of results we see are games like the one featured in this article.
To put it simply, there’s little chance that a major third-party publisher would release the indie game in this story, and if it did, there’s probably a good chance that it might have a ton of changes that the developer might not have wanted.
The free indie game in question appears to be a popular visitor on GAMINGbible, and it’s none other than Bongo Cat, developed by
Marcel Zurawka and Julius Krüger, collectively known as Irox Games.

“Bongo Cat needs your help. Bongo Cat needs more hats! Every time you press a key, Bongo Cat will punch your taskbar. Type, click, play, work to collect more points. Which hats will you find?” reads the synopsis of the game on Steam.
Well, it’s pretty much what the title of the game states: it’s about cats that play the bongos. It’s also a desktop game, but there’s not much else to add, other than it’s a bonkers free Steam game that the community can’t get enough of.
At the time of writing, it’s rated as “Overwhelmingly Positive” by Steam users, from over 25,500 reviews. It’s also currently sitting high in the Steam charts in fourth place, beating the likes of Rust, Slay the Spire II, GTA V and more.
As for the concurrent players on Steam, according to SteamDB, it has over 152,000 players in the last 24-hours, not far off its all-time peak of 194,508, 12 months ago at launch in 2025.
“Lovely little loot drop game, he just sits in the corner, and I forget he's there half the time!” said Steam user Tinkered Bell.
“Great game! cute idle clicker that is so unassuming and has minimal impact on system resources... I absolutely LOVE this!” declared Kae717.
“Cute game, simple and easy setup. It’s great to use on-stream with my community and friends!” wrote ZaffLuto.
Bongo Cat is a totally free game and looks to have been created purely for the fun of it. While you can enjoy Bongo Cat for free, it does have a few optional pieces of DLC that add squirrels, mechs and even wrestlers to the game.
Right now, it doesn't look like there are plans to release Bongo Cat on PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo. However, the system requirements do not look taxing, and hopefully, it should run without issues on most modern PCs.
For the time being, at least, Bongo Cat is a PC.
