Steam reportedly hit by massive data breach, you're urged to change 1 setting asap

Warning to all Steam users!

For PC gamers, Steam is your one-stop-shop for all things gaming by allowing us to purchase the latest titles, access frequent sales, and even get a taster for new releases courtesy of demos.

With millions of gamers all across the world making use of the Valve storefront, you would think that Steam’s security would be top-notch.

However, that is seemingly not the case as it has been reported that data from over 89 million Steam users has been leaked on the dark web courtesy of a vendor breach.

With 89 million users making up around 70% of Steam’s user base, it is safe to say that many of us will be affected.

This news comes courtesy of Mellow Online on Twitter who posted the following message earlier today:

“Yesterday, an alleged major Steam data breach occurred, compromising over 89 million user records (roughly two-thirds of all Steam accounts).

These datasets are being sold for over $5,000 on what appears to be a site akin to Mipped.

Mipped alongside their sister sites is a forum site we at SteamSentinels have warned Steam about for years for instances of developer blackmailing, review manipulation, greenlight boosting, and other dodgy activities, but as of yet, Steam hasn't tried to take action against the site.”

As a result, Steam’s inaction has led to this data breach and the “selling of tens of millions of user account details”.

Luckily, there is a way to protect your account.

As expected, it is recommended that you both change your Steam password and activate two-factor authentication just to be safe. Additionally, only accept codes that are sent to you immediately after your password reset.

If you receive any other emails claiming to be from Steam, please exercise caution.

Steam has yet to comment on this data breach at the time of writing.
