Finding your latest gaming grind in a world bursting with options can be 'overwhelming'. There's an abundance of options that can drain your appetite, thinking you're missing out on one game while playing another.
But thanks to Steam's review system and our keen eye for bargains, you can cut through the mess and find hidden gems that transfer your overwhelming confusion into overwhelming positivity.
That's exactly the recipe with Casualties: Unknown.
As a relatively unheard-of game, this adventure simulation has attracted mass praise, with players flocking to the community hub to write their first reviews ever, simply to praise the free demo.

So, what's it all about? Well, it's cave exploration combined with survivalism and medical prowess, as you take control of a heroic test patient sent to die, but refuses to allow anyone else to succumb to their fate.
At first glance from its cover art, Casualties: Unknown drops into the same category as countless Steam freebies, with a cutesy animated fox as its protagonist in a bright, colourful world.
But beyond the loading screen, it's entirely different.
You're put in the shoes of a medical hero who has to loot and survive while helping countless patients on the way, with a brutal difficulty level.
Mainly, you are saving patients with in-depth simulated cardiovascular and limb damage systems, which have been praised as the most realistic systems seen in a game of this scope.
With nearly half of the game available in its current demo, you can really get into Casualty: Unknown and can even restart your run as the free taster has no time limit, just a mission cap.
Without making appearances at indie features at Summer Games Fest or like-minded showcases, this game has built its reputation on quality alone, as Steam users are flocking to the community hub with paragraphs of admiration.
"It's a GEM hidden around trash, really fun and intense, a lot of crafting recipes can make you play it for a really long time. I recommend using Wiki to help you or watch guides to be more familiar with the game.
"It's really realistic, and ragdoll physics are good, and the damage you take, floors, lore, all perfect."

A second, enthusiastic fan added, "I have never seen any game, even simulators with this level of realistic medical systems, and it's fun as hell."
The only complaint that can be found is its difficulty level, which will dampen spirits due to the unforgiving nature of not being able to save characters or yourself.
Yet, most people have admired that realism, even in an animated sci-fi sim.
"The game itself is brutal. Sometimes VERY brutal," said a third fan.
"Exclusively for those who can tolerate all the cruelty that might befall your character. I never ever felt more guilt in my life than in a few game sessions here. But despite all the misery the game offers, it's incredibly addictive."
Steam doesn't lack for freebies and heavy discounts, especially with offerings like the 10/10 retro nostalgia blast 'WinBolo', but with the full launch of Casualties: Unknown coming later in 2026, this is quickly becoming a must-play.
