It’s incredibly difficult to gauge when The Elder Scrolls VI might actually arrive.

The going theory is that it’s years away from launch. Todd Howard’s vague mentions of the project don’t exactly negate that, but they don’t back it either.

With all of this in mind, it’s safer if we act as if it won’t arrive in the near future, and to help soften that blow, I’ve found a worthwhile substitute.

Developed by Notorious Studios, Eldegarde is a new fantasy action RPG developed by Blizzard veterans that’s set to launch next month.

On 21 January 2026, Eldegarde well welcome in its 1.0 launch but don’t worry if this is the first you’re hearing of the title; it went by the moniker Legacy: Steel & Sorcery during early access.

Eldegarde is class-based, with players being able to pick from various options, including Warrior, Rogue, and Wizard, as they “dive into a world of magic and steel, battling monsters and knights, as well as other players”.

There’s plenty of combat for players to partake in which has "been designed from the ground up for PvP”.

You will be able to “feel the impact of your attacks and use your abilities to carve out the flow of battle”.

“Quick decisions and precision are necessary to win,” devs add.

There’s a hefty Skyrim-esque world for you to explore where you’ll be able to find valuable loot which you can then turn into handy elixirs or new armaments at shops.

Inns are dotted throughout Eldegarde, providing somewhere to rest up, organise your stash, or cook a meal to prepare for your next outing.

The game can be enjoyed solo or with up to two friends.

I’ll also point out that there’s a reputation system, so you’ll want to improve your relationship with vendors in order to nab the best gear.

Of course, this is merely scraping the surface of what Eldegarde has to offer. It also packs plenty of quests plus a comprehensive upgrade system, and devs will continue to expand the experience over time.

The 1.0 Launch Follows a Successful Early Access Period

At the time of writing, the early access version of the game boasts a 71% approval rating.

“Had a lot of fun playing, learning curve is a little steep but great for exploring the world with friends,” read one review.

“Such a great concept,” added another.

Like the sound of this one? You can enjoy Eldegarde in early access now via Steam, upgrading to the 1.0 version for free on launch day.

If you plan on waiting for that day, dive into Eldegarde on 21 January.
