PlayStation 5 owners could be entitled to up to £500 following a $7.9 billion lawsuit for store prices.

The lawsuit was put towards Sony by Alex Neill, who believes the marked-up prices of the PlayStation Store between 2016 and 2022 were an abuse of the company’s dominant position in the gaming market.

Sony seemingly shrugged off the lawsuit as more of an annoyance than an actual case, but will need to defend itself following the decision the case will go to court. One of the many goals as part of the case is to have compensation delivered to PlayStation 5 owners who bought digital games during between 2016 and 2022, up to a maximum of £500 each depending on how much money they spent on digital games during that time.

Ironically Sony has been very defensive about its position in the gaming market, even going so far as to oppose the Xbox and Activision Blizzard deal when it encountered difficulties with the FTC. Sony believed the merger would eliminate competition in the industry, as Xbox now has exclusive access to huge franchises like Call Of Duty, even though Xbox boss Phil Spencer has said several times that there are no plans to make them exclusives.

Xbox even recently made the announcement that four exclusive games will soon land on the PlayStation 5.

The lawsuit against Sony will likely enter courts later this year, and interested PS5 owners who believe they are entitled to compensation can register their interest via the official claim website.

In all likelihood Sony will win, but looking on the bright side it’ll hopefully make it clear that gamers aren't happy to pay inflated prices for digital games anymore, especially when they can easily be taken away on a whim when stores close or they aren’t transferable to other consoles.
