PlayStation unveils major update, fans agree it's a 'win'

Sony backs down and gives the players what they want

PlayStation gamers are finally getting an update they’ve been begging for since the release of Helldivers 2, but said update seemingly won’t affect those on PlayStation 5 hardware.

As revealed on the official PlayStation Blog, players on PC will now receive specific incentives in-game for linking their PlayStation Network Accounts to their Sony games.

“Starting with tomorrow’s release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for PC, we’re working to add more benefits to playing with an account for PlayStation Network,” announced Asad Qizilbash, SVP Head of Publishing.

“The Last of Us Part II Remastered (coming April 3, 2025), in addition to God of War Ragnarök and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, will all soon be adding in-game content unlocks for PlayStation Network account users.”

Said benefits include early unlocks for the “Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and the Miles Morales 2099 Suit” in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Jordan’s Jacket from Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet as a new outfit for Ellie in The Last of Us Part II Remastered.

Take a look at Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet in action below.

However, while the incentives themselves are nice, the real win comes in the form of the changes Sony are making to the PSN account linking system on PC.

“An account for PlayStation Network will become optional for these titles on PC,” Qizilbash continued, “Players who still opt to sign into a PlayStation Network account will also enjoy added benefits like trophies and friend management.”

For those not in the know, forced PSN account linking became a bit of a drama for Sony last year following its addition to Helldivers 2.

Thousands of players who were unable to create PSN accounts, because they lived in countries where doing so was impossible, were suddenly unable to play a game they’d already purchased.

It might not seem like a big deal to those who were unaffected by the issue beforehand, but this is a huge win for consumers. Making linking your PSN account an incentive rather than a requirement simply means that more players can now access these games on PC, and that’s never a bad thing.

And hey, if you can’t (or won’t) link your PSN account to these games, then don’t worry - I’m sure there will be mods to unlock all of this within two minutes of their release anyway.
