The PlayStation Plus monthly offering has been through some up and down months recently, but October has a real highlight for players to look forward to.

As confirmed in the State of Play, Alan Wake 2 will be the headline game on offer next month, with Remedy Entertainments atmospheric horror being the highest rated game to feature in the free offering this year.

Alan Wake 2 was comfortably one of the best releases of 2023, picking up where the first game had left off some 13 years earlier, and taking advantage of the more advanced hardware to create an experience that very few releases manage to replicate.

The big difference you'll notice if you played the first game and not the second is that it's very much a survival horror this time around, rather than the more visceral action horror of the original.

It also features two separate single-player stories that can be played through in any order, with your perception of the story definitely dependent on which you choose.

Rounding out the games for October are Goat Simulator 3 and Cocoon, while The Last of Us Part II was confirmed to be joining the PlayStation Plus game catalogue from 26 September.

Goat Simulator 3 is the conclusion of the chaotic goat-based trilogy that PewDiePie made famous. It essentially allows you to run about as a goat and destroy a bunch of people's stuff, so if that sounds like your kind of thing then you should look nowhere else.

Don't sleep on Cocoon either if you're into puzzle adventures. It puts players in the "shoes" of a beetle that has the uncanny ability to hop between worlds. You'll need to do that to progress through the game and solve all of its puzzles, and it's a genuinely innovative mechanic that should test if the most battle-hardened of puzzle enjoyers.

The Last of Us Part II will need absolutely no introduction to many, with Naughty Dog's blistering second narrative zombie release picking up where the first left off. If you haven't given it a go yet, you're genuinely missing out on a seminal experience, and one that there's absolutely no excuse to avoid being that it will soon be available at no extra cost to subscribers.

The PlayStation Plus Classics catalogue will also be getting Tekken 3 and Soul Calibur 3. Tomb Raider Anniversary will also be coming at an as yet unnamed date in 2025.
