One of the latest free PlayStation Plus games is a hit amongst fans, and it’s like a gothic take on Red Dead Redemption.

I don’t know who the first person was to decide mixing Western cowboys and demonic monsters was a good idea, but they were definitely onto something. Rockstar Games was inevitably cooking with Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare, and it’s a shame they didn’t try anything similar for Red Dead Redemption 2.

While this free PlayStation Plus game isn’t comparable to the stellar open-world fun of Red Dead Redemption games, it’s a pretty close second. It’s called Evil West and is one of January’s PlayStation Plus games to claim and keep in your library forever.

The premise is pretty simple. Evil West is an action-packed third-person shooter where the Old West is taken over by a dark entity. It’s up to the player to deck themselves out with a large assortment of explosives and boomsticks before heading out into the world and blasting whatever demonic threat stumbles into view.

It’s great fun, and a good option if you’re looking for games where you can switch off your brain and enjoy some mindless mayhem to pass the time. There’s also a coop mode if you fancy joining up with a friend who’s also subscribed to PlayStation Plus.

Fans on Reddit say it’s “the perfect modern take on the fun and ridiculous games of the early to mid-00s,” and we’re fully in agreement.

Another fan called it a “great middle shelf game,” saying it’s a “good time” if you get it on sale or for free.

One fan said it’s like “Devil May Cry and Dark Watch had a 7/10 lovechild.”

Finally, someone said “I wouldn't call it perfect, but it is a pretty good time. Great in coop too.”

Evil West can be redeemed and played as part of your PlayStation Plus subscription but will disappear when the January games are cycled out, and the February ones take their place.
