If PlayStation culling physical games has gotten you down don’t fret, as this PS2 PC port plans to take you back to the good old days.
For those that somehow missed it PlayStation announced on July 1 that physical games will be a thing of the past by 2028. The company has no plans to produce physical copies after that time which suggests the PlayStation 6 will be an all-digital console.
Gamers are outraged to say the least, but this upcoming PC release has us feeling a little better.
We live in a world of wonders thanks to PC gaming and one of those wonders is emulation. Decompilations have also become an exciting way of bringing back retro games like never before.
Stormeslayer’s Sly Cooper and the Thievius Racoonus remaster isn’t a decompilation but it is the best version of Sly Cooper you’ll play nowadays, and won’t cost you $80 like Grand Theft Auto VI…

This enhanced version of the first Sly Cooper game is, in Stormslayer’s own words, “revitalized and playable on PC”, bolstered with an “unlocked resolution, an optional HD texture pack, patches for widescreen and 60FPS.”
Some gameplay footage was shared in the below announcement tweet and it looks solid. It’s also very easy to play yourself.

It simply uses the PCSX2 emulator which is easily downloadable. The tricky part is getting the ROM to go with it, and then downloading the above update for the game.
Those that still have a physical copy of Sly Cooper and the Thievius Racoonus can rip the ROM required from the disc.
Those that don’t own a copy of the game would have to download a ROM from the internet, which is piracy and shouldn’t be done under any means necessary. That said, we're sure PlayStation’s new stance on physical games will leave some gamers tempted to break the rules…
If you can successfully get it working you’ll get to play the best version of Sly Cooper and the Thievius Racoonus currently available.
Sly Cooper is another IP that PlayStation owns yet continues to do nothing with. It joins the likes of Ape Escape and Jak And Daxter as franchises games would love to see return, but likely never will. The best you’re likely to get is more cameos in Astro Bot games…
Never say never though. There’s more demand than ever to resurrect the classics so who knows, perhaps we’ll get a remaster or remake somewhere down the line.
PlayStation greenlit remakes of the OG God of War trilogy so provided they sell well that could open the door for more retro revivals in the future. Just don’t expect any of them to be released on discs after 2028.
While PlayStation and its rival Xbox continue to implode on themselves, it’s nice that we can still find things in this industry to make us smile. Gaming needs more passion projects now more than ever.
