A demo for a gorgeous retro-inspired RPG title is available to play right now, no PlayStation Plus required.

PlayStation Plus has an ever-expanding lineup of titles ready to be downloaded and played at a moment’s notice. While AAA games always feel at home on the service, it’s the indie games that always feel like hidden gems you wouldn’t have discovered if they hadn’t been added to the service.

In August, a brand new RPG called Sea Of Stars, inspired by retro gaming classics, will be added to the PlayStation Plus Extra catalogue, and a free demo can be downloaded right now. The game will also be released for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch.

The story is about “two Children of the Solstice who will combine the powers of the sun and moon to perform Eclipse Magic, the only force capable of fending off the monstrous creations of the evil alchemist known as The Fleshmancer.”

Featuring a modern take on turn-based combat, Sea Of Stars takes players through a magical story with a heavy focus on exploration and traversal. Environments are very open-ended, and highly interactable, granting more freedom of movement than most RPGs.

The game’s developer, Sabotage Studio, reportedly wanted the traversal to feel rewarding, hence it equipped the player with a varied moveset to ensure the game’s pacing never slows while you’re figuring out where to go.

Sea Of Star’s demo can be downloaded from the PlayStation Store right now, and features areas found in the full release. Each demo area was apparently selected to give interested players an idea of what to expect from the game’s environments and mechanics, without giving too much away in terms of story content.

Sea Of Stars will launch on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on 29th August and will be added to PlayStation Plus Extra from day one. It will also be available on Xbox, Nintendo and PC platforms.
