PlayStation is home to several of gaming’s most beloved IPs, many of which are on somewhat of a hiatus.

That doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of them, with an array of familiar franchises likely to, once again, rear their head in the coming years.

You can understand why developers may want to take a break to work on something else given how long development cycles are these days.

Working on back to back sequels could see you tied to the same franchise for more than a decade.

Even still, as the old saying goes, money talks and if a sequel seems like an obvious win, it’s likely that it’ll enter development at some point.

Here are nine PlayStation sequels we believe are guaranteed to arrive - even if we do have to wait a considerable number of years for them.

Horizon 3

Horizon Forbidden West, Credit: SIE

Aloy’s story isn’t complete with Guerrilla Games yet to confirm a third mainline Horizon instalment, instead choosing to develop co-op spin-off Horizon Hunters Gathering. The studio has, however, confirmed that the switch to live-service doesn’t mark the end of its single-player offerings. With Horizon Hunters Gathering yet to lock in a release date though, it’s likely a fair guess that Horizon 3’s release could be upwards of three years away, but I hope I’m wrong.

At the end of the brilliant Burning Shores DLC which continued Horizon Forbidden West’s story, Aloy reunited with Sylens who provided an interesting lead pertaining to her upcoming fight against Nemesis, a rogue AI. Sylens uncovered mention of four weapons that could take Nemesis down and it’s likely that we’ll hunt down those leads in Horizon 3. Due to the passing of the late Lance Reddick, it remains to be seen what happens with Sylens’ role in the story.

The Last of Us Part III

The Last of Us Part II, Credit: SIE

The Last of Us Part II could form the end of a very brilliant duology, but it feels as if there’s one more chapter to this tale - something creator Neil Druckmann has voiced on several occasions. The Last of Us Part III feels like one of PlayStation’s most in-demand sequels, and it looks like it’s something Naughty Dog might develop after its current project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, is shipped.

Druckmann recently teased that the franchise has a final few stops with many taking this to be confirmation that a Part III is in development, especially after Druckmann stepped away from his role overseeing HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation. Abby is implied to have found the fireflies at the end of Part II and that’s a story thread I think we’ll see continue to unravel. Ellie perhaps also needs to examine what her immunity means to her now that she knows the truth and isn’t consumed by feelings of revenge. My gut says the characters’ paths will once again cross.

Astro Bot 2

Technically, there have already been five Astro Bot titles which would make the next one Astro Bot 6. However, we’re very specifically referring to a sequel to 2024’s very brilliant Astro Bot. Astro has appeared in various formats over the years, from VR to free tech demos. In Astro Bot though, he finally took centre stage, with the game scooping up endless awards and Astro cementing his newfound role as PlayStation’s latest mascot.

Astro Bot tapped so brilliantly into PlayStation’s rich heritage, both in the way that it mixed in cameoing IPs and brought platforming back to the forefront of PlayStation’s first-party offerings. The DualSense immersion is the best example out there so there’s precisely no reason why Astro Bot 2 shouldn’t be made. There’s so much room for growth, especially if a sequel adds in optional co-op. It would be cute to see Astro Bot gain a love interest.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 3

Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 is perhaps the only game on this list that you could argue as already having been confirmed given that Insomniac Games’ plans leaked several years ago. However, the studio has clearly pivoted away from those plans, proven by the complete lack of DLC for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 so until a third entry is officially announced, it deserves a spot on this list.

If you recall, the end of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 perfectly set up a sequel. The ending saw Peter Parker step back from his web-slinging alter ego, leaving Miles Morales in charge. It looks as if he’ll soon be called back into action though with a post-credits scene teasing a Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus team-up with Octavius shown writing “The Final Chapter” in a journal. A second post-credits scene then introduced Cindy Moon, or Silk, a likely third protagonist in another entry.

Ratchet & Clank 10

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Credit: SIE

It’s a second entry for Insomniac Games as Ratchet & Clank is also long overdue a return. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart perhaps isn’t talked about as often as other PlayStation 5 exclusives, but it’s easily one of the very best within that category. In fact, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is the 10th best-selling PlayStation 5 game and, as I said, money talks. Plans for a new entry were present in that leaked Insomniac Games timeline I referred to but again, nothing official has been announced just yet.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart concluded with Ratchet, Clank, and Rivet defeating Emperor Nefarious. While there’s no obvious tease about where a sequel might take us, it is widely believed that it could take our characters to a Lombax dimension mentioned both in Rift Apart and 2007’s Tools of Destruction. Rift Apart features audio logs by a Lombax called Mags with the game making great effort to work up to her name reveal. It’s perhaps likely that we’ll meet Mags in the sequel as Ratchet and Rivet explore this dimension pertaining to their species.

Ghost 3

Ghost of Yōtei, Credit: SIE

Ghost of Yōtei was a bit of a shock reveal. While many expected that Ghost of Tsushima would be followed by a sequel, no one predicted that a sequel would turn the series into an anthology with each instalment featuring a new protagonist. Shifting from Jin to Atsu could have been polarising, but Ghost of Yōtei was a resounding success, improving upon Tsushima’s formula. Its first month of sales also saw it exceed the sales pace of its predecessor.

Sony hasn’t revealed updated sales figures since that initial month came to a close last year, but it’s very likely that Ghost of Yōtei will eventually outperform Ghost of Tsushima which surely means that another sequel is warranted. Of course, a third Ghost game is a tad different to every other franchise on this list. What time period and fighting style would a new anthology entry introduce? There are less clues we can go off here but I’d be surprised if Sucker Punch was done with the Ghost series for good.

Uncharted 5

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Credit: SIE

Uncharted 5 is another title that almost feels as if it is confirmed but technically, it isn’t. When I say Uncharted 5, I am referring to another fifth mainline entry as spin-offs The Lost Legacy and Golden Abyss already push the franchise past that number. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End did nicely wrap up Nate’s saga, but it introduced us to his daughter Cassie too - and that’s always felt like a purposeful move to keep the door open.

Insiders have been claiming for quite some time that Naughty Dog has a second game in development alongside Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, with that mystery title supposedly having been in development for several years, helmed by Shaun Escayg. He directed The Lost Legacy, adding fuel to the fire, and recently posted from Trinidad & Tobago claiming to be doing research. Many took this as confirmation that Uncharted 5 is indeed real with Cassie perhaps dragging Nate out of retirement.

Until Dawn 2

Until Dawn, Credit: SIE

Until Dawn is an outlier on this list as while it is a PlayStation exclusive game, Supermassive Games is a third-party developer. Still, it seems obvious that PlayStation and Supermassive are collaborating on Until Dawn 2. Suspicions first began to arise when a remake of that original title was released in 2024, despite Until Dawn holding up perfectly well. I would recommend checking out Ballistic Moon’s remake though as the improved visuals do make for a more thrilling experience.

The biggest difference between the original and the remake is the addition of a post-credits scene in the latter. The post-credits scene picks up with Sam in LA “some years later” where she’s awoken by her alarm at 6am surrounded by pills for her PTSD. Upon waking, Sam notices a bleeding wound on her forearm. A red hue then clouds the screen as an unknown male voice whispers her name. While we don’t know how a sequel would deal with canonising the deaths (or not) of Sam’s friends, it’s clear that our protagonist isn’t done with the supernatural.

God of War 6

If rumours are to be believed, the God of War franchise will soon surface again with a supposed Faye spin-off set to be announced, filling in a gap in the narrative of the Norse Saga. Beyond that though, it’s very likely that Kratos will return for a full new mainline entry. God of War 6 is likely very far away if the Faye spin-off is real, especially as we also know that Santa Monica is remaking God of War I, II, and III.

With the Norse Saga complete, God of War 6 would have to take Kratos to a new mythology. There’s some who would like to see him return to Greece, although Egypt is perhaps the most popular choice given how many incredible Egyptian gods there are that we could see Kratos go toe-to-toe with. An Egyptian weapon was wielded by Tyr in the Valhalla DLC. Don’t forget that Tyr also used a Japanese sword and Mesoamerican or Mayan weapon, leaving several doors open.
