The PlayStation 5 Pro may have only been out for just over a month but that has not stopped Sony fans from eagerly awaiting the next hardware update.

It has been a successful couple of years for Sony with the launch of both the PlayStation 5 back in 2020 and its mid-generation update, the PlayStation 5 Pro, in November 2024.

With hardware improving by the second and games requiring more power to run them at their highest settings, it is no surprise that companies are battling to keep up.

However, according to a recent interview with Sony’s Platform Business Group CEO, Hideaki Nishino, the current consoles may be sticking around for a while longer yet.

Speaking to Japanese publication Famitsu, Nishino believes that the traditional home gaming consoles will remain relevant for the foreseeable future, despite the rise of Cloud gaming.

“As of today, many PS4 games are being played, and the number of PS5 games is increasing rapidly,” he explained.

“It is unlikely that this will suddenly change tomorrow, so there is no doubt that home video game consoles will remain at the center of our business for some time.”

When questioned about the life-cycle of the current Sony console, both the PS5 and PS5 Pro, Nishino believes that they will both have a longer life-cycle than previous consoles before it.

However, this will not affect the next iteration of the PlayStation.

That means that production on the PlayStation 6 will still go ahead and release when ready, regardless of how well the PS5 is still performing.

“We believe that the PS5 will have a long lifecycle, just like the PS4,” Nishino continued.

However, I don’t think it is right to delay the timing of the launch of the next product that incorporates new technology because of the long time it will take.

The timing for the launch of new hardware is related to the time frame in which technology evolves and the time frame in which we are able to implement that technology.

Therefore, I think it is important to offer new products while people play the ones that are currently being used, and to expand the total number of games we offer.”

Put simply, the PlayStation 6 is on the horizon but for now, the PlayStation 5 is here to stay.
