PlayStation 5 gamers have been treated to a surprise free download available now for one of its best third-person shooters.

Since the PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, we’ve been spoiled for choice when it comes to fantastic console exclusives such as God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West, and The Last of Us Part I and to name a few.

However, with so many fantastic games to choose from, it would be easy for some to have been forgotten about over the years. One such game could be the brilliant Returnal, released in April 2021 and developed by Housemarque.

Check out the Returnal trailer below!

As brought to our attention by Push Square, in celebration of Returnal’s launch four years ago, a free update is now available for PlayStation 5 Pro gamers.

“After crash-landing on a shape-shifting alien planet, Selene finds herself fighting tooth and nail for survival. Again and again, she’s defeated, forced to restart her journey every time she dies,” reads the synopsis of Returnal.

“In this roguelike shooter, both the planet and your equipment change with every cycle, forcing you to adapt your play style and take on evolving challenges.”

While exact details on how much the free update will improve Returnal remain vague for now, in a tweet, Housemarque did confirm that the game will have 2.5x the pixels and a higher resolution when being played on the PlayStation 5 Pro.

“Guess I’m returning,” joked TVatWork on Twitter.

“LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO,” yelled mrpyo1.

“Finally. Thank God,” replied a relieved OlaTawose.

I’m sure the likes of tech experts Digital Foundry will go into a deep dive analysis on their YouTube channel with the free PlayStation 5 Pro update. Either way, it’s great news for Returnal fans.

Returnal is out now on PC and PlayStation 5. It’s also available with a subscription to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium at no extra cost.
