Horizon Zero Dawn fans are surprised by a free new PlayStation 5 download that’s sneaked its way onto our consoles this week.

Developed by Guerrilla Games, Horizon Zero Dawn was originally released on the PlayStation 4 in 2017 before being released on PC and PS5. Even when playing Horizon Zero Dawn on the last-gen console, it still looks gorgeous today.

In our review of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, we said: “You may not have thought it possible, but this version of Aloy’s world is even more beautiful, with Nixxes’ subtle attention to detail resulting in a space that feels even more immersive and brimming with life.”

At the time of writing, a third mainline entry in the popular PlayStation series hasn't been announced. That being said, fans know Aloy will return at some point, especially following the closing moments of 2022’s Horizon Forbidden West and its Burning Shores expansion.

In the meantime, while we wait for a new Aloy fix, we can at least claim these brand-new animated backgrounds that appeared on PlayStation 5 this week.

The animated backgrounds include Ghost of Tsushima, God of War Ragnarök, Days Gone and more. It’s certainly nice to have that choice because, for months, choices inspired by first-party titles have been very limited with Astro Bot as the only option.

PlayStation has silently rolled out new Animated Backgrounds for the PS5 Welcome tab to select users!

For Horizon fans, adding to the Astro Bot animated background, we now have Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West and LEGO Horizon Adventures to showcase our love for the series.

The 12 new animated backgrounds weren't initially available to everyone as they were likely rolling out in phases. However, I have just checked my PlayStation 5 and they’re all there, so that’s hopefully the same for you too.

Now, if Sony would hurry up and add a new animated background for The Last of Us, I’d greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
