GTA 6 Gamers Slam Unexpected Price Hike

Another blow for fans

Yesterday saw the frustrating news that PlayStation 5 consoles will receive a price hike throughout the United States and this does not bode well for those who need to purchase one ahead of the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI.

According to Sony Interactive Entertainment, the cost for the PlayStation 5 is set to increase by $50 and this includes both the Digital and Pro editions.

"Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment. As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21," Sony wrote in an official blog post.

"The recommended retail prices for PlayStation 5 accessories remain unchanged, and we have no other price changes to announce for additional markets."

It is less than good news for U.S. consumers as the updated prices for PlayStation 5 consoles come in as follows:

  • PlayStation 5 – $549.99
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99
  • PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99

If you are lucky enough to already own a PS5, then you do not need to worry but if you have been holding off on that purchase, it seems as though you may have shot yourself in the foot, especially if you have been waiting to grab one closer to the launch of GTA VI.

Set to be released on 26 May 2026, Grand Theft Auto VI will launch on both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S and with the cost of the former now increasing, it is no wonder that those affected are feeling frustrated.

Following the price hike news, the GTA 6 Countdown Twitter account asked fans “are you planning to purchase one before GTA 6?” and the comments were soon full of venting users.

“Bro I’d be having a sale right before GTA 6 not amping up the prices,” one user said.

However, another user was well prepared.

“Knew the tariffs were coming so I bought mine during the summer,” they shared.

Now let us hope that Rockstar does not follow suit with the cost of Grand Theft Auto VI when it launches next year.
