Red Dead Redemption 2 Fan Expansion Adds Perfect New Feature

A new Red Dead Redemption 2 fan expansion has added a brilliant new feature, and we can’t believe this isn’t in the base game.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is already a massive game, but modders have proven time and time again that there are new ways to expand the game.

When there are mods adding new ways to make money or improving the combat, it can be quite easy to become absorbed in tweaking the game to your liking.

One feature in particular that always felt a little undercooked in Red Dead Redemption 2 were the heists. There were a few scripted bank heists in the story missions, but you couldn’t really do that during regular gameplay.

What is Banks of the West for Red Dead Redemption 2?

Banks of the West adds fully-functional banks to the free roam section of Red Dead Redemption 2. These banks are added to Valentine, Rhodes, Saint Denis, and Blackwater.

These banks can be used to deposit and withdraw cash, but as I implied earlier, they can also be robbed at any point. To do this, you simply enter a bank and point a gun at the teller in the same way you’d rob a store.

The teller will take you to the safes in the back where you can start making a withdrawal. You can either force the teller to open the safe, or use dynamite to blow open the door.

Be warned that robbing a bank comes with a penalty of a $1,000 bounty. However, the potential reward scales depending on how many safes you manage to steal from, with several thousands of dollars up for grabs.

After a robbery, a bank is placed on lockdown and has a cooldown for a number of days at which point it’ll be inaccessible to you, to either rob or place a deposit.

The mod does more than that though, as it also rebalances how money and death work together. If you die, you lose all cash that you’re carrying, so you’re incentivised to deposit more into the banks.

However, if you die while wanted and your bounty is over $100, the authorities can seize 50% of your bank balance. So, keeping your money inside the bank also isn’t a safe bet.

Similarly, choosing to surrender to the authorities will clear all your bounties, but will also empty your pockets and bank account.

You can download Banks of the West now for Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC by going to the Nexus Mods page.
