Whenever you hear the phrase "free games", you could be forgiven for suddenly getting all suspicious and thinking that you're about to be served a bunch of adverts and microtransactions.

As time has progressed though, more and more of the big game platforms have begun to give away otherwise pricey games at no cost to the consumer, usually in deals with the developer to get more players on board.

The Epic Games Store, in particular, has become a bit of a proving ground for that approach, with free games available to all players at no cost, with an Epic account the only barrier to entry.

Now, they've done it again, with a popular shooter that usually costs in the region of $30 currently in the store for free, taking all the risk away from you as the potential player.

As first pointed out by a helpful user over on Reddit, PvPvE multiplayer shooter Wildgate is currently available on the Epic Games Store for free, and you can keep it as long as it is claimed before 8 January.

Whilst that doesn't give you a ton of time to take advantage of the offer, it really is just a case of a couple of clicks, you don't even need to download it right away.

If you've never seen the game before, Wildgate blends tactical combat between spaceships with very fast-paced first person shooter mechanics.

There are plenty of elements to keep you coming back for more, with each game varying based on your upgrades, environmental hazards and which powerful weapons you manage to accrue.

If you don't usually favour first person shooters, you can also pick up one of the better real time strategy games you will ever play via the same method, with Total War: Three Kingdoms currently free to players, also until 8 January.

That game takes players to the late Eastern Han Dynasty and the subsequent Three Kingdoms period in China, as you fight for dominance amongst warring clans and ambitious leaders.

It's arguably one of the best games in the storied strategy series and the attention to detail placed on that period of Chinese history makes it one of the most interesting prospects set in that era and region.

Next week will likely bring a couple of fresh offerings to the proverbial party, so make sure to keep an eye on the store between now and then.
