Halo is set to make its grand return later this year with Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of the game that started it all. However if you’re bored of the same tired re-releases we’ve got something new to recommend instead.
Perhaps we’re treating Halo: Campaign Evolved too harshly. Our preview session was an overall positive one and Halo Studios has done a decent job so far of modernising Halo: Combat Evolved for a new audience, but while some would argue it’s too different to the original we’d actually argue it’s not different enough.
When the full game is in our hands though we might feel differently, though in the meantime we’d much rather check out this bold reimagining of the Halo series that turns it into a roguelike.
Any Halo player will likely have fond memories of their most intense Firefight match. When all your lives are lost, your teammates are down, and it’s just you vs an onslaught of Covenant forces as your ammo rapidly depletes.
It’s peak Halo and now you can experience it in an entirely different way through Minecraft of all things.

Halo Rogue is available for the Java edition of Minecraft and is exactly what it sounds like. This roguelike gamemode drops you into a randomly generated Minecraft world decorated with structures from the Halo series. The goal is to survive five days and five nights with a limited number of lives. It’s basically Firefight but with a day-and-night cycle.
Rather than being a standalone mod it’s actually a collection of mods working together to create the experience.
The full list includes; New HaloCraft 3.0, Dawn of the Flood, Halo Saga, Halo Soundtracks MC, and Halo MDE.
Enemies from the Halo games appear in waves, from Covenant Elites to Flood Infection Forms, making it a tense fight for survival where you have no idea what will be snapping at your heels next.
Each time you load in you’ll be given a random weapon loadout, with over 30 weapons from the Halo series featured in the mod.
It’s a lot of fun for a freebie and unlike the official Minecraft x Halo collaborations this one does more than just change the visuals. You actually feel like you’re playing a Halo game but with Minecraft’s graphics.
The modpacks creator Active_Percentage289 shared it on Reddit saying: “It took me a long time to get all these mods working, but I know it did not take as much time than it did to actually make these mods … Be sure to check out these mods out to see all of their features.”
Instructions on how to download and install it to your game were also included.
Halo Rogue feels as good as a standalone Halo game, and is worth checking out while you wait for Halo: Campaign Evolved which launches later this year.
