A new Legend of Zelda game is on the horizon, we’ll soon be able to explore Hyrule as Princess Zelda, and now we’ve been surprised with free Nintendo Switch downloads.

All in all, it’s a fantastic time to be a Legend of Zelda fan.

Come the end of September, we’ll be able to experience an epic story through the eyes of the princess The Legend of Zelda is synonymous with.

Our very own Ewan Moore dubbed The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom a “masterful quest”.

Fans can’t wait to experience this new era in the Nintendo franchise for themselves.

However, before that happens, there’s other Zelda related content that requires your immediate attention.

New Nintendo Switch Online icons have dropped, and they’re bringing a blast from the past with imagery based on The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX.

The selection on offer, while beautiful, is rather limited when compared with previous icon batches.

Nonetheless, while a smaller grouping, these free Switch downloads are sure to tickle the fancy of Zelda fans.

Rather than imagery taken from in-game, these icons are illustrations; they have an old school Disney feel to them.

Not everyone will like this creative decision, as demonstrated by one fan who referred to them as “ugly”, however, we suspect the majority of fans will like what they see.

In the words of a Twitter user coming to the icons’ defence, “They look great.”

As detailed by Twitter account ឵឵NSO Icons Alerts, the icons shown are available now and will continue to be so until 30 September.

Originally, the same account said the icons would be available until October, but this is incorrect.

There are a few weeks of September left, so it’s not like you need to rush to claim one or all of these Zelda themed icons.

Still, just make sure to download your favourite freebies before the timer runs out – it's all too easy to forget.
