Legendary Super Mario games Galaxy and Galaxy 2 are headed to the Nintendo Switch consoles.

Since its inception in 1985 on the NES, the Super Mario franchise has been a leading mascot of the video game industry that has spawned countless sequels, spin-offs, board games, movies and more.

There are so many fantastic Super Mario games to choose from over multiple Nintendo generations, it would be quite the task to pick out a firm favourite.

However, perhaps two games that may be at the top of many lists would be 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel, Super Mario Galaxy 2 from 2010, both of which originally launched on the Nintendo Wii.

The Super Mario Galaxy remasters were announced during today’s Nintendo Direct event and will be coming to both Nintendo Switch consoles sooner than we might think.

The announcement of the Super Mario Galaxy remasters was made alongside the news that we’re getting a sequel to 2023’s blockbuster production, Super Mario Bros. Movie. Oh, and it’s inspired by the two Super Mario Galaxy games.

Just how much it will be inspired by Super Mario Galaxy remains to be seen, but I’m sure we can expect some stunning visuals and locations that complement the beloved games.

Furthermore, during the Nintendo Direct, Shigeru Miyamoto teased that there will be nods for veteran fans, but there will also be plenty of new surprises, too.

Both games will be available as a physical bundle, but also individually on the digital Nintendo eShop. While both games will be available on the Switch and Switch 2, there was no word at the time of writing whether they will be enhanced on the newest console.

There will be two amiibos available at launch, inspired by the Super Mario Galaxy games, namely Mario and Luna, as well as Rosalina and Lumas. Not to mention a cute physical storybook.

Both games are considered to be two of the best that the entire franchise has to offer, and fans have been calling for modern remasters for years. So, no doubt, this will come as welcome news to many.

On the aggregate website Metacritic, Super Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2 both scored 97, more than earning the “Must-Play” accolade and confirmed to be all-time greats.

Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be released on Nintendo Switch next month on 2 October 2025.
