Pokémon returns to Kanto once more in a new game that has a major twist.

Ever since the Pokémon series made its debut in the mid-90s on the Nintendo Game Boy, it quickly became one of the most popular video game properties of all time, garnering fans of all generations.

The success of Pokémon has not only spawned tons of video game releases but also animated series, live-action movies, countless merchandise and of course, wonderful trading cards.

Now, fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A later this year. However, that’s not the only Pokémon game we’re getting because a curious fan-made release is also on the way.

The game in question is called Pokémon Ghost Grey Version, and its trailer was shared on Reddit, impressing fellow fans of the series.

Taking us back to Kanto, Pokémon Ghost Grey Version is inspired by the classic games of the Game Boy era but with a heavy dose of emo. Watch the trailer, and you’ll soon see what I mean.

“I didn't think I'd be interested in this one from the last post, beyond thinking the intro cutscene and title screen were really well made, but now that I see actual gameplay, I'm very interested,” exclaimed Cuprite1024.

“Wow, this hack ROM looks really cool, and it makes me want to try it. It would be great if they made a Spanish patch for this masterpiece,” requested KitchenParty9607.

“Love everything about this. The black and white direction, the tone and the ghost sprite on the title screen. Fingers crossed you can make the date because it's perfect,” said These-Button-1587.

“First time I've heard of this project and I'm instantly sold. This looks amazing,” replied waynethehuman.

The developer of this indie Pokémon game, JoeyZeed, intends for it to be released this October, just in time for Halloween.

As for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, that is currently scheduled to be released on 16 October 2025 for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
