The Nintendo Switch 2 is almost upon us. Well, some lucky few already have one in their hands, as it turns out several gamers have posted unboxing videos of the new hardware.
However, big daddy Nintendo is always watching, and has a tactic for those who managed to snag a console early.
It turns out that upon switching on their shiny new console, these early holders of the Nintendo Switch 2 were greeted by a message saying that the hardware needs a day one update before it can be used.

That update will only roll out on the official launch day, meaning until then, it’s pointless having one beyond some internet clout.
Of course, as soon as the information made its way across social media, a few fans saw this as a worrying ‘feature’ believing that Nintendo can essentially brick your console whenever they choose to.
“Maybe I’m putting too much thought into it, but that’s a concerning feature,” said one Twitter user.
Further down into the thread, another user said, “Almost every major electronic has some sort of system to brick your device if they feel it’s necessary.”

It’s not really a surprise that Nintendo is protecting their console from those who got one early, as the hardware could be missing vital features and mechanics for the smooth running of it.
However, many other fans believe this is a concerning feature to implement, despite the security risks otherwise.
“Very concerning feature…” said one fan, while another jumped in to say, “It's concerning, but I guess future revisions of the console (not major, just new stock) will have at least the first update preloaded on it.”
This user has the right idea in that this is likely a simple security measure to prevent any launch issues, or showcasing features that Nintendo would prefer owners experience for themselves, and it won’t appear on consoles after launch day.
