In a very ‘Nintendo’ move, we got some news overnight from the Japanese company that the Nintendo Switch 2 will officially be backwards compatible with all your Switch software.

This comes after months of speculation and guessing on the part of the community and makes us think that a proper announcement from Nintendo can’t be too far away.

A huge success for Nintendo Switch has been the recent launch of the Yakuza series to the console

Not only will the new console definitely play your old games, but Nintendo Switch Online will make a return giving access to online play and a retro catalogue of games.

Does this put pay to rumours that the Switch 2 will feature a second screen for Nintendo DS and 3DS emulation?

The news came after a Corporate Management Policy Briefing at Nintendo's headquarters.

Nintendo president, Shuntaro Furukawa broke the news via social media saying, “At today's Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch.”

The statement continued, “Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well. Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.”

While there’s no word on exactly when the announcement will occur, this news shows a Nintendo gearing up towards finally showing the console.

The Japanese company also confirmed this week that plans haven’t changed for the Switch successor and it’s still on track to be announced before the end of the financial year (March 2025).

This is huge news for fans. The Switch has been such a standout console and many of us have bought countless games we’ll no doubt want to play again.

Knowing that these games will function and play on the next console will be a relief to those with large collections and it’s great for games preservation.
