The Nintendo DS is finally set to be dethroned as the company’s best selling console of all time, if you can believe it.
When I was growing up, it felt like everyone had a Nintendo DS. Playing Pokémon Diamond and Pearl on that thing was almost like a rite of passage for kids my age.
It’s no surprise that it quickly became the best-selling console of Nintendo’s history, and second-best of all time only behind the PlayStation 2.
However, the Nintendo Switch has been creeping up on the record the DS holds for quite some time, and it may finally be set to overtake it at Nintendo’s next financial update.

Nintendo’s next financial report is due to take place on 3 February, 2026. This is where up-to-date information and sales figures are announced for Nintendo’s various products on the market, including Nintendo Switch consoles and various games that have been released in the past year.
It’s here where we’ll get new sales figures for the Nintendo Switch, which were last reported at 154.01 million, only a fraction below the DS’s 154.02 million.

Could The Nintendo Switch Beat The DS In Total Sales?
Given how much the popularity of the Nintendo DS exploded in the mid-2000s, it would be an incredible feat for Nintendo to beat that with the Switch’s sales figures.

The console will probably land comfortably in second place behind the PlayStation 2 when it ceases production, which currently sits at 160 million units sold since it launched 26 years ago.
In fourth place lies the Game Boy and Game Boy Color, which sold 118.69 million units in their lifetime, and the PlayStation 4 sits in fifth place with 117.2 million units sold.
Nintendo’s next financial update is also set to feature sales totals for Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Imprisonment, Kirby Air Riders, Pokemon Legends Z-A and Metroid Prime 4, which all released in the last quarter.
Meanwhile, it’d be nice to also see how the Nintendo Switch 2 is selling.

The last update we got showed that the Switch 2 had sold 10.36 million units since releasing in June. However, these numbers are dated to 30 September, 2025 and won’t account for sales made at the end of the year.
So, it’d be interesting to see how many Switch 2 units Nintendo shifted at the end of 2025, when people would likely be getting them as gifts for Christmas.
Plus, if you were lucky enough to get a Nintendo Switch 2, you've got some... Interesting JoyCons to pick. Scroll down to check out the brand new colours, if you can see them.
