On 8 May, PewDiePie’s Twitch account was suddenly hit by a mysterious ban, prompting many fans to assume that the streamer had been hacked. Now though, PewDiePie, real name Felix Kjellberg has explained exactly what happened.

PewDiePie once had the most subscribed-to channel on YouTube, which still boasts 111,000,000 subscribers, but in recent years, he’s fallen to fifth place. MrBeast sits in fourth with 155,000,000 subscribers, with Sony Entertainment India, Cocomelon, and T-Series filling out the top three. Still, PewDiePie is the most popular gaming account and still draws in heaps of viewers. The streamer is best known for his YouTube channel but earlier this year, he made a controversial comeback to Twitch, re-streaming his old YouTube content via that platform.

The ‘infinite’ content loop didn’t go down well with fans, seeing as PewDiePie hadn’t actually made a real return to Twitch at all. Many assumed it was this ‘livestreaming’ loophole that may have led to the ban but now, the streamer himself has explained exactly what happened.

The ban was lifted three days later. As reported by Dexerto, responding to the debacle, PewDiePie confessed that he didn’t know the true reason for the ban but he’s assumed it was linked to some of his content from 2017. In a new YouTube video, he explained, “It’s really cool because Twitch, just like YouTube, doesn’t say what made you banned, so I don’t know. I probably shouldn’t have been streaming the videos from 2017, but hey. It was a weird time.”

He went on to explain why he was re-streaming old content, saying that it was an experiment and a fun way for fans to connect. “Everyone thought I was hacked first, because we were doing a 24/7 live stream on Twitch just for fun,” he continued. “I thought it could be a good way to make people have the chat and watch videos together, and it’s there if people want it.”

For all those fans concerned, the account is back up and running.
