We might not be any closer to a brand new TimeSplitters game, but you can always rely on passionate fans to deliver what we really want. TimeSplitters: Rewind is a standalone experience that's being developed by fans of the original anarchic shooter franchise. The team at Cinder Interactive plan to include maps, weapons and characters from the first three games, all completely rebuilt.

You might even have heard of Rewind before now, as it's been in development for a few years at this point. While fans of the project were initially concerned for its fate back in 2018 when THQ Nordic acquired the licensing rights to the franchise, a recently shared development update proves that Rewind is still very much in active development - even if it does still look like fairly early days for the project.

Check it out for yourself below. As you can see, Cinder Interactive has managed to get half of the original TimeSplitters' maps up and running, as well as the story mode from the first game. Previously, Rewind was intended to be a multiplayer-only experience.

While the progress made is undeniably exciting, the video makes it clear that there's still a long way to go before Rewind reaches its final form. The new plan, apparently, is to release finished content in batches rather than wait for the whole game to be completed. This way, the video explains, if the project is shut down or abandoned for whatever reason, fans will still have a little something to play.

"We've decided that we are going to have less content available at launch," Cinder says. "But that means that we will be able to release it sooner. The current plan is to have what we consider to be a feasible amount of content with functioning systems and gameplay."

It's certainly good news that Rewind will be with us sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, we still don't actually know exactly when "sooner" will be. Evidently, this is a very small but dedicated team doing the best they can as efficiently as they can, and we should all be grateful for that.

At various points in the video, Cinder also stresses that the current lack of manpower is a very serious problem - one that could derail the entire project. If you're interested in helping out, Cinder is looking for environmental artists and other developers to get in touch via Discord.
