It's no secret that Netflix has seen better days. The streaming giant revealed in its latest earnings report that it just recorded its biggest loss in nearly 10 years, for one thing.

Its response so far - to cancel more shows and crack down on password sharing - hasn't exactly won anyone over. Just last week, Netflix managed to wipe $50 billion of its value in less than 24 hours. And now, just to really stick the knife in, even Blockbuster has managed to get one over on the company.

For those of you who are too young to remember, because I am forced to admit you do exist, Blockbuster was this crazy place where you could go to rent physical movies. And buy popcorn and other snacks while you were there, assuming your parents were cool.

In other words, Blockbuster was the start of any magical Saturday night for an entire generation. Unfortunately, the rise of streaming services such as Netflix ultimately nudged the brand into irrelevance.

Except as it turns out, Blockbuster has been able to get one last laugh in - and they didn't even have to try. A Blockbuster tweet from September 2011 has resurfaced that, quite by accident, brilliantly roasts Netflix's current predicament.

Over a decade ago, Blockbuster attempted to win customers back by asking Netflix users why they were leaving the service. Anyone who provided a good reason with the hashtag #GoodbyeNetflix could win a whole year subscribers to Blockbuster! Savvy marketing, but not quite enough to have saved the company back then.

Tweet why you’re leaving Netflix. The top three most creative tweets using #GoodbyeNetflix will win a 1-year subscription to Blockbuster!

— Blockbuster (@blockbuster) September 21, 2011

But, with things going the way they're currently going for Netflix, the Blockbuster tweet has resurfaced more popular than ever before as it takes on a deeply ironic new light.

Perhaps I was too harsh on you. https://t.co/vdQUtwQJ2Q

I can't imagine this is how Blockbuster returns to former glory, but it's nice to see the old ways haven't been completely forgotten.
