Shrek Star Mike Myers Wants To Make It An Annual Franchise

Ah, Shrek. Meme value aside, the movies are genuinely really good. Well, the first two are, anyway - Shrek the Third kind of flopped, and Shrek Forever After wasn’t much better. But when you have a sequel as strong as Shrek 2, who are we to complain? No one, I tell you.

That said, it’s been a long time since we’ve seen our favourite green ogre on the big screen - the last film graced cinemas in May 2010. Up to that point, we’d been blessed with more Shrek content every three years (not counting the shorts), but all has been quiet in the swamp since. That’s not to say that the people behind the films wouldn’t want to come back for more, though - Mike Myers, the voice of Shrek himself, recently revealed that he’d love for it to become an annual franchise.

Shrek recently starred as a brutal boss in Elden Ring (unofficially, anyway) - check it out below.

As reported by FragHero, he spoke about the possibility during an interview with GQ on YouTube: “I loved the idea of taking a fairy tale and turning it on its head, and having it be that all the traditional bad guys are good guys, and all the traditional good guys are bad guys,” he said. “And I realised it’s a dramatic role. I mean, halfway through I went, ‘there’s an emotional centre here.’

“You know the old joke, ‘I wouldn’t want to be a member of a club that would have me as a member’? I have always felt that way,” he continued. “The concept of going from a self-loathing ogre to a self-accepting ogre was meaningful to me. I love playing Shrek. If I had to do one Shrek a year, I’d be thrilled.”

Whether or not this will actually happen is another matter, but there’s a very decent chance that we’re going to see a fifth movie release at some point in the future. According to Wikipedia, Jeffrey Katzenberg (one of the producers of Shrek) revealed in 2004 that Shrek’s story had been broken down into five planned films from the very start, and in far more recent times, there’s been whispers of it being in the works (although nothing has been officially confirmed yet). The thought of a new Shrek film coming out now that the titular ogre is well cemented as a legendary meme is certainly something, and honestly? I’d love to see it.
