With Robert Downey Jr. recently being unveiled as Doctor Doom in the next phase of the MCU, it begs the question as to who will step into the Iron Man suit in his stead.

Last weekend saw the shocking news that Robert Downey Jr. would not only be returning to the MCU but he would be returning as Doctor Doom rather than Iron Man.

Check out the trailer for Marvel's latest movie, Deadpool & Wolverine below!

The announcement was made at San Diego’s Comic-Con and sent the internet into a frenzy with Marvel fans torn between excitement and disappointment.

Now a week on and a new rumour has begun circulating that a pretty big Hollywood actor would be taking on the role of Iron Man.

Courtesy of a Tweet by MyTimeToShineHello, it is Tom Cruise who will be donning the suit and becoming Iron Man which is perhaps unsurprising considering he was initially considered for the role back in 2008.

When he is not busy working on the latest Mission Impossible movie or planning on sky-diving at the Olympics closing ceremony, it seems as though he is in talks with Marvel.

However, with Downey Jr. reportedly receiving over $80 million to return to the MCU, we can only imagine that Cruise will be receiving the same, if not more.

It seems as though Kevin Feige has set his sights high for the Iron Man variant but with no confirmation as of yet, it is worth taking this rumour with a pinch of salt.

However, that has not stopped fans from sharing their opinions on the rumoured casting.

“Imagine Cruise as Iron Man vs RDJ as Doom. That high key sounds dope af,” one reply read.

Another said: “Tom Cruise as Iron Man vs. RDJ as Doctor Doom. If they pull it off, the new Avengers movies will make $2 billion each.”

It remains to be seen if Cruise will finally take on the role of Iron Man but regardless, it is an exciting time for Marvel fans to say the least.
