Mass Effect fans torn over Mass Effect 5 release date

Give us a release date, you stupid jellyfish!

Despite being one of the biggest video franchises of all time, you’d be forgiven if you forgot that Mass Effect 5 is on the way.

It’s been nearly four years since Mass Effect 5 (not its official name) was announced during The Game Awards 2020, sending those in attendance and watching at home into a frenzy. However, since that time, other than teasing a mysterious character, BioWare has not given us any major updates on its development.

Check out the new Mass Effect announcement trailer below!

To be fair to BioWare, the developer has been hard at work getting Dragon Age: The Veilguard ready for release and that time finally arrived on 31 October 2024.

In our review of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, we said: “From the moment I stepped onto Minrathous’ streets, it felt like coming home. After such an agonising wait, the franchise I adore is back as strong as ever.”

So, now that the development of Dragon Age: The Veilguard is over with (other than post-launch patches), surely it’s time for BioWare to shift its main focus to Mass Effect 5, right?

As brought to our attention by the Twitter account Culture Crave, in an interview with Rolling Stone, BioWare creative director John Epler, said: “With Dragon Age: The Veilguard now complete, BioWare confirms that there are currently no plans for downloadable expansions.”

While it may be sad to learn that Dragon Age: The Veilguard isn't getting an expansion (though I’d never entirely rule that out), what Epler said next will please Mass Effect fans.

“The developers’ full attention has now shifted entirely to the next Mass Effect as their current project,” he continued. That being said, this should be a time when the Mass Effect community is in unison unless it concerns a potential release date.

“It's our time,” declared Redditor akino_anime.

“I can’t wait for it to come out in 2030,” replied cochrane210 to which kolosmenus jokingly added “So soon? Nah, it will be 2035.”

“The teaser trailer was four years ago. It’s safe to say BioWare announced it far too early,” said BigBootyKim.

“Hopefully it will be good. All I can say is let’s hope it will be good, but not get our hopes up or high expectations at the moment,” stated the cautious jayxorune_24.

At this time, there’s no telling when Mass Effect 5 will be released but it might be safe to expect it to be a next-gen title, just in case.
