Marvel Black Panther game quietly cancelled by EA

Another blow for the gaming industry

It is another blow for the gaming industry after it has been revealed that the Marvel Black Panther game has been cancelled.

Not only that but its developer Cliffhanger Games has also been shut down by EA.

The Black Panther video game was first announced back in 2023 and despite a lack of information, we do know that it was planned to be a single-player, action-adventure, open-world title.

It was set to be developed by Cliffhanger Games, a studio also formed back in 2023 and consisting of some of the former developers of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor.

Now it seems as though the project will never come to fruition as EA has issued a series of layoffs overnight.

Reported by IGN, EA Entertainment president Laura Miele claimed that this decision, as well as other recent cancellations and layoffs, are in order to "sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities."

"These decisions are hard," Miele shared.

"They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them — including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles."

In some semblance of good news, Miele also claims that EA will be focusing on franchises such as Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends from now on as well as investing in the new Iron Man game at Motive and the third Star Wars: Jedi entry.

However, as a result of this cancellation, there will now be no Black Panther project in the works.

That being said, when asked about EA’s deal with Marvel, Miele said the following:

"Our partnership with Marvel remains strong and our multi-title, long-term collaboration continues."

It is sad news for both Cliffhanger Games and fans who were excited to dive into Marvel’s Black Panther and just another stark reminder of the ongoing troubles facing the gaming industry in recent years.
