Fight Night returns as EA confirms long-awaited boxing game comeback after 15 years

EA has officially confirmed the long-awaited return of Fight Night, the iconic boxing game series, ending a 15-year wait since Fight Night Champion launched in 2011.

Since Fight Night Champion launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, fans have been eagerly awaiting the return of EA's boxing series. Since then, we've had a few wannabe contenders, most of whom were knocked out in the first round.

The strongest challenger has been 2023's Undisputed, developed by Steel City Interactive. Many hoped it would be a spiritual successor to Fight Night, but it offers a more challenging, realistic boxing simulation compared to Fight Night Champion's accessible, pick-up-and-play action. Now, EA has finally announced Fight Night's long-awaited comeback.

EA confirms Fight Night's comeback, but can it win over a new generation?

“To everyone who stayed in our corner: Fight Night is coming back,” tweeted the official EA Sports Fight Night X account. Created in October 2026, this is the account's first post, confirming the unexpected news that fans have been waiting years to hear.

A 15-year wait is a long time, and it'll likely be even longer by the time Fight Night returns. Many fans may have given up hope, while two whole console generations have passed since Fight Night Champion, meaning plenty of gamers may never have played the series. That's one of EA's biggest challenges.

The next Fight Night will need to lean on nostalgia to bring back old fans while attracting a new generation, including casual boxing fans. Ideally, it would launch in time to capitalise on the hype surrounding the long-awaited Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury fight this December. However, unless it's already been in development for years, that's unlikely to happen.

On the flip side, the next Fight Night could become one of EA's most popular sports games. Unlike Undisputed and the Creed VR games, Fight Night's accessibility and appeal to casual players could significantly boost its chances of success. That is, of course, if EA delivers polished offline and online gameplay, a deep roster of current and legendary boxers, and perhaps even a fun story campaign and robust create-a-boxer feature.

What's more, EA has delivered some fantastic officially licensed UFC games that do a great job of capturing the brutal nature of MMA. However, many boxing fans will understandably be frustrated that EA has seemingly abandoned Fight Night in favour of multiple UFC entries since the series debuted in 2014.

At the time of writing, EA hasn't revealed any details about the new Fight Night beyond confirming its return. We don't even have a release window, and while a 2027 launch is possible, there's nothing to confirm that just yet. As mentioned earlier, over 15 years is a long time to wait, and that extended absence could make it harder to appeal to a new generation of fans.

Ultimately, EA really needs to knock the next Fight Night out of the park and then some. We're either going to get an epic George Foreman comeback, when he became the oldest heavyweight world champion at 45 in 1994, or a return more like Muhammad Ali's painful defeat to Larry Holmes in 1980. Only time will tell.
