Mark Zuckerberg Has Something To Say To People Mocking His Metaverse

The Meta CEO has admitted that the picture looked "basic", and stressed that the graphics "are capable of much more".

If you’ve spent any time at all on the internet over the last week or so, chances are, you’ll have encountered Mark Zuckerberg's incredibly cursed metaverse selfie, which the Meta CEO shared in celebration of Horizon Worlds’ launch in France and Spain. Horizon Worlds, if you were unaware, is Meta’s own online VR game, which first rolled out in an invite-only beta period late last year.

While you're here, be sure to take a look at some of our favourite virtual reality moments below.

In case you hadn’t seen the picture (or just wanted to marvel at it again), take a look below. I’m sure I don’t need to tell you why it became a talking point - regardless of your stance on the metaverse, there’s no denying that the graphics here really don’t look good. Zuck's avatar model, the background, the tiny Eiffel Tower - it all looks super out of date, and people were quick to start making jokes.

Now though, as reported by Metro, Zuckerberg has directly responded to the situation in a new post, stressing that despite the “basic” photo, Horizon can look much better.

“Major updates to Horizon and avatar graphics coming soon. I'll share more at Connect,” he wrote. “Also, I know the photo I posted earlier this week was pretty basic - it was taken very quickly to celebrate a launch. The graphics in Horizon are capable of much more - even on headsets - and Horizon is improving very quickly.”

He also shared some visuals to back this up - an updated avatar model, and a different location. They certainly look a lot better than the last image did, but something tells me that people won’t stop poking fun at it anytime soon.
