With two new Lord of the Rings movies in the works, it seems as though the prequel films already have their Gandalf.

It was announced back in May that Andy Serkis would be teaming up with Warner Bros. Discovery to work on two brand-new Lord of the Rings movies.

Check out the trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim below!

Acting as prequels, Serkis is set to direct and star in the two films with the working title currently being Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

With the first movie slated for a release in 2026, there is not long to wait and it seems as though we have just found out another member of its already star-studded cast.

That’s right, Sir Ian McKellen himself could be returning to reprise his role as Gandalf the White.

Starring as the infamous wizard in all of Peter Jackson’s original movies as well as The Hobbit trilogy, McKellen returning to the series would be a big win for its crew and fans alike.

This news comes after the 85-year-old actor recently spoke to The Big Issue about his potential return.

“Enthusiasm for The Lord of the Rings shows no sign of abating … I can’t tell you any more than that,” he said.

“I’ve just been told there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved and they hope that I’ll be playing him.”

This follows on from McKellen announcing that he had no plans to retire any time soon.

“I shall just keep at it as long as the legs and the lungs and the mind keep working,” he said, whilst promoting his new movie The Critic.

However, the award-winning actor has urged the creators behind the new prequel series to get a move on.

“When? I don’t know. What the script is? It’s not written yet. So, they better be quick,” he mused.

As for Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, joining Serkis will be Peter Jackson as the producer as well as Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens who co-wrote the original trilogy and will return as screenwriters.

They will be joined by Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou (Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim).
