Jim Carrey Explains What It's Like To Play Eggman In The Sonic Movies

In an interview with GAMINGbible, Carrey revealed he toned down his "own megalomania" for the role, but thinks Eggman is "so much fun".

It’s a very important day in the world of cinema today - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is officially out in the UK (the U.S unfortunately has another week to wait - sorry folks). Okay, so it’s probably not the most anticipated movie of the year for most people, but it’s still not one to miss - in our review, we said that it’s a “tremendously enjoyable film”, and is “hilarious, full of action, brimming with references to the games, and undoubtedly better than the first film.”

The cast is also pretty dang star-studded - as well as Ben Schwartz reprising his role as Sonic, and Idris Elba making his debut as Knuckles, there’s also, of course, Jim Carrey making his grand return as Eggman (genuinely the best possible casting choice there, you can’t deny it). Here at GAMINGbible, we got to speak to the legend himself about his role, including what he hopes Eggman might get up to in any future movies.

Check out our full interview with Jim Carrey below!

He told us that “it’s always fun” to play more eccentric characters: “I really have to tone down my own megalomania just to play [Eggman]. I think he’s just so much fun, and he’s evolving, you know, that’s the good thing about him - he didn’t just stay one way,” he said, speaking about his role. “He went to the Mushroom Planet, carved off ‘the hair of the loser’, and then he grew that moustache, which is an outward manifestation of his ego - the size of a seesaw.”

When we asked Carrey what he’d like to happen with Eggman if there’s a third Sonic movie, he had some pretty interesting ideas: “Just imagine if Robotnik could multiply himself, clone himself, or shrink his machines down to a nano-technology that is imperceptible to the human eye […], the possibilities are endless.”

According to Toby Ascher, the producer for the Sonic movies, there’s a whole “Sonic Cinematic Universe” planned, so you’d think we’ll be seeing a lot more Eggman action in the future. That said, in an interview with Access Hollywood this week (and as reported by Variety), Carrey revealed that he’s actually “fairly serious” about retiring: “If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break,” he said. So, we’ll just have to see what happens, but there’s no doubt that fans would be happy to see him reprise his role again later down the line.
