We love sinking our teeth into a good horror, while we've arguably been in something of a renaissance in the past 15 years. As indie titles like Amnesia: The Dark Descent poked through, AAA releases including The Last of Us and Alien: Isolation continued the trend.
Even the old guard, like Resident Evil, jumped on the bandwagon when Resident Evil 7 went back to basics in 2017, while more recent releases like Alan Wake 2 and The Mortuary Assistant have sent our pulses pounding.
There's a reason many hold Creative Assembly's Alien: Isolation as the 'scariest' game of all time, but that means there's a lot to live up to with the upcoming sequel. Unfortunately, while Alien: Isolation 2 doesn't have a release date, Team Clout's ILL looks like it can more than scratch that infected itch with the potential for an equally expansive franchise of lore.

We've been banging on about ILL for years now, with some pitching it as Resident Evil meets Silent Hill. Getting a surprise update at June's Sony State of Play, we got to see just how gooey ILL really is.

Taking it beyond the Resi comparisons, some have said it could be the most brutal horror FPS since the first F.E.A.R. game debuted back in 2005, but even after we got a glossy story trailer, we're still confused as to what's actually going on.
There will be plenty of time to explain that later, and according to the devs, there should be the opportunity to explore the wider world of the ILLverse in a planned sequel.
Speaking to ComicBook, Team Clout co-founder Maxim Verehin admitted that several ideas were cut from the first game.
Seeing this as a good thing, it leaves the door open to continue the story. Verehin explained: "Everything is going to be interconnected, and you’re going to feel that in the story. There are going to be some characters that are playing a role, providing guidance. Some of them don’t tell you much about what they know, and they don’t necessarily know everything in the world."
Saying that some stories end in the first game as "some of them are spreading around towards the future iterations," Verehin reiterated there are 'a lot' of ideas.
Being careful not to give too much away, the developer added: "I catch myself with the thought that we already have such a broad universe that if we were to make a sequel, there is already an idea for what it could be and what characters would be in it. Vaguely speaking about the story for future iterations, I would like it to be connected to the first game."

While it's all well and good to cheer for an ILL sequel, Verehin said he knows it all depends on what players think of the first outing. Although he's "super excited to see how the world of ILL could be expanded in the future," we need to get the first one out of the gate.
An impressive team of talent has worked on the likes of Longlegs, the somewhat disappointing Until Dawn movie, V/H/S/Beyond, and It: Welcome to Derry, and it's not hard to see those influences in some of the game's creature designs.
We unfortunately don't know much more, with ILL simply listed for a simple '2027' release. This is at least more positive than Alien: Isolation 2's update, with horror hounds left waiting for even a vague release window.
Either way, these two survival horror juggernauts should have us eating well over the next few years. With it being 12 years and counting since Alien: Isolation first had us changing our underwear, let's hope we won't be hanging around until 2029 to get another ILL.
