GTA 6 fans losing their minds over supposed updated release date

Don’t get your hopes up!

GTA VI fans are losing their minds over a new supposed release date update, but it’s wise to lower your expectations.

When Rockstar Games decides to drop the release date and the second trailer for its next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, there’s every chance that it will proverbially break the internet, with social media buzz causing all sorts of meltdowns.

So, just imagine the meltdown when GTA VI actually releases, whenever that time might be. It is expected to be released late this year, but as we know, especially with Rockstar Games, release date delays are always likely.

Check out the Borderlands 4 trailer below!

In August 2024, Borderlands 4 was announced, developed once more by Gearbox Software and published by 2K. It’s worth keeping in mind that 2K is owned by Rockstar Games’ parent company, Take-Two Interactive.

It was noted that Borderlands 4 will be released before GTA VI, and some fans hoped that the Borderlands 4 release date might narrow down when to expect the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto launch.

This week, Gearbox Software co-founder Randy Pitchford tweeted an update on the release of Borderlands 4. Rather than the game being delayed, its launch has instead been brought forward to the delight of fans.

With the internet being the internet, optimistic fans thought that the reason why the release date of Borderlands 4 has been brought forward is to avoid it clashing with GTA VI.

“Many wondering if it’s cause of the GTA VI release,” tweeted JakeSucky with the video featuring Randy Pitchford.

However, some fans believe that it might have something to do with Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon, and I’ve even seen some mention Sucker Punch Productions' upcoming Ghost of Yotei.

To put that gossip to rest, Randy Pitchford clarified the reason why the release date of Borderlands 4 has been brought forward.

Borderlands 4 shipping early is 100% the result of confidence in the game and development trajectory backed by actual tasks and bug find/fix rates,” he tweeted. “Our decision is literally 0% about any other product’s actual or theoretical launch date.”

Borderlands 4 will be released on 12 September 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.

At the time of writing, Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to be released late this year on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
