As GTA VI trailer 3 becomes an imminent possibility, a former GTA VI artist has warned fans about their expectations.

Theories about GTA VI trailer 3’s release date range from in the coming weeks to all the way ahead in September, but one former Rockstar Games developer has got something to say about it.

Former GTA VI artist David O'Reilly, who was an environmental artist at Rockstar between 2011 and 2023, has spoken publicly about the alleged upcoming third trailer for the game.

Speaking on an episode of the Kiwi Talkz podcast (via GamesRadar), O'Reilly said: “I can't wait for the next trailer too, all that stuff I have no idea about, the characterization, seeing that city all fleshed out so much more than when I'd last wandered it.”

However, he also issued a warning to GTA VI hopefuls regarding the content of the trailer, explaining how marketing material is hyper-focused on the details that are finely polished.

“When you make a trailer, they look at where the camera's going to be, and that view is getting madly polished,” he explains. “Whereas everything that's not in that view is not getting madly polished yet. The whole world doesn't look like that. You focus on the areas of the trailer.”

GTA VI Trailers May Not Necessarily Reflect The Final Quality

It makes sense, considering how much budget has likely gone into the marketing alone for GTA VI, and Rockstar Games will want to shift as many copies of the game as possible. And it can do that best by polishing the trailers as much as possible, even if the rest of the game is unfinished.

It’s very likely that this means the final game will look different from what we saw in the first two trailers. Character details may be slightly different, lighting, animations, and other things may change too. This also occurred with Red Dead Redemption II and GTA V.

Still, O’Reilly is just in the dark as we are, having left Rockstar Games in 2023.

“With GTA VI, people are like, 'What's the story?'," he explains. "And I'm like, 'I've no idea, dude, I don't know.' Because I worked on it for five years, but I have no idea about the storyline, other than I knew it had two characters, and that was the extent of my knowledge.”

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what the third trailer brings. Grand Theft Auto VI releases for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on 19 November, 2026.
