GTA VI may still be just under nine months away, but it hasn’t stopped people from complaining about the potential long wait we have until GTA VII.

Rockstar Games will finally launch Grand Theft Auto VI in May 2026, ending a nearly 13-year wait for the sequel to GTA V.

While it’s set to be the most expensive game of all time, and will likely have the sales numbers to justify that, it’s got some fans concerned that the wait for GTA VII could be just as long—if not longer.

Posting on Reddit, one fan asked if the time gap between GTA V and GTA VI will become the standard for the series moving forward.

“I remember seeing a comment somewhere, probably this sub, where someone said they'd been playing GTA V for almost half their life,” they wrote. “I chuckled thinking it was an exaggeration - then I remembered....oh yeah - I was playing V when I was 13 - I'll be 27 the month after VI comes out."

They continued, “So there were people playing V in their late 20s who are in their early 40s now. Surely there's no way a gap this long happens again? If it does, this may be the last GTA for a lot of people.”

I’m trying not to think about that. I was 18 when GTA V came out, and I’m in my thirties now. If the wait between GTA VI and GTA VII is another 13 years, I’ll be 44 by then.

“I think Covid may have added an extra couple of years to the release date,” wrote one person in the replies. “My guess is we'll have a new Rockstar game every five years, with a new GTA every 10.”

“It might be the opposite this time, because GTA VI already looks nearly photo-realistic like live scenes rather than a video game,” another user theorised. “So they might start work on VII sooner, since it won't be so far ahead in terms of the required tech.”

“In my opinion, GTA VI is gonna be built for longevity,” another user wrote. “I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if it’s another decade before we see another GTA. But again, this GTA has longevity in mind most likely. Can’t say the same for GTA V. It seemed they just did the best they could while working alongside the success GTA V had.”

Never say never I suppose, but hopefully GTA fans won’t have to wait as long for the next instalment.
