The biggest gaming news of the year has just dropped, and no, I’m not talking about Microsoft buying out Activision. A new line of Garfield video games has been announced, in what can only be considered fantastic news for anyone who dislikes Mondays and/or enjoys lasagne on occasion.
A new deal between French game publisher Microids (whose previous work includes Beyond a Steel Sky and Flashback 25th Anniversary Edition) and ViacomCBS Consumer Products is going to see the production of three new games featuring everyone’s favourite pasta-guzzling cat, which can only be very strong game of the year competitors when they launch.
Garfield also recently starred in what's surely the greatest fighting game of all time, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl. Check out the trailer below.
Perhaps what’s most interesting is that the press release specifies that these games will be “spanning across different video game genres”. This is obviously incredibly vague, but that also means that the possibilities are endless. Could we be getting a Garfield horror survival? Or maybe even a dating sim? Look, they’ve not said that we’re not, so I'm going to believe that until told otherwise.
“We are thrilled by this new agreement with ViacomCBS Consumer Products,” said Alain Milly, editorial director for Microids. “Garfield is a well-known and family-friendly IP fitting perfectly our portfolio made of popular franchises for all ages. Following successful collaborations on Garfield: Wild Ride and Garfield Kart Furious Racing, we are incredibly honoured to work with ViacomCBS Consumer Products on three new games”.
If you asked anyone what the greatest racing game of all time is, there’s no doubt that they’d answer “Garfield Kart Furious Racing”, so we can be certain that these new titles will be of the highest quality. Back in December, Garfield was also added as a playable character in Smash Bros. Ultimate’s greatest competitor, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, so it seems he’s having a bit of a comeback of sorts. Or at least, they’re trying to make him have a comeback. Whether he actually is or not is up to you.
