This modder has done a brilliant job upgrading and overhauling Far Cry 2 to achieve ultra graphics settings and an extensive number of gameplay improvements.

Released for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 in 2008, Far Cry 2 was a ginormous leap into the unknown compared to its predecessor. While Jack Carver took on the nefarious Dr Krieger and his cronies alone, the player in Far Cry 2 can choose their character. Whichever characters aren't chosen then appear as allies that help the player complete side missions through specific talents or abilities. The story itself is set in an anonymous Central African state, and offers deserts, jungles, and savannas for players to explore. Lastly, the Dunia engine engendered complex and dynamic events to occur, like a day-and-night cycle, tree and vegetation regeneration, and wildfires that change dependent on wind speed, direction, moisture, and vegetation type.

In a way, Far Cry 2 laid the foundations for the series to circle its core tenets: a diverse open world, a team of misfits tagging along, and emergent gameplay events that cause chaos for the player and their enemies. Titled "Far Cry 2: New Dunia," modder dannyhl2 developed this mod which brings the game in line with how you remember playing the original game. Most pertinently, the graphics have gotten a lick of paint, with unique new textures, realistic lighting, improved visual effects, and an ultra setting. Here's a snippet of gameplay with an older version of the New Dunia mod, for your viewing pleasure:

The audio, which notoriously caused a number of issues in Far Cry 2 at launch, has also been improved. Players will enjoy new soundtracks as an optional addition, and the improved sound positioning and new gunshot sound effects will immerse them in the world of the game. dannyhl2 has stamped out a few bugs, too, namely the gnarly healing animations, the missing truck engine sound, and the Jackal tapes issue. As well as this, gameplay improvements include new, cleverer enemies, player movement and stamina upgrades, machete stealth kills, new and more realistic weapons and weapon performance, shorter car chases, and the ability to drive, shoot, and throw grenades simultaneously.

The modder has had a bit of fun with the overhaul, as the golden AK47 now spawns in the game, to say nothing of the random DLC weapons that appear in every nook and cranny. Far Cry 6 is set to launch in February 2021, and Ubisoft is promising that it will be the "most extensive playground" of any Far Cry entry to date. Well, playing Far Cry 2 with the New Dunia mod, that might give it a run for its money.
