Pity poor Sam Fisher.

Spare a thought for poor Sam Fisher, star of Splinter Cell. Once a prominent player in the stealth-action scene, Ubisoft's former frontman has been reduced to a bit-player in other franchises. Instead of appearing in a new game of his own, Fisher has instead been relegated to cameos in various other titles like some kind of friendly ghost.

I know Ubisoft thinks that this constant acknowledgement of Fisher is good for fan morale, but it's not. Seeing him in all these other video games is like when your ex insists it won't be weird if you still hang out from time to time, but it's totally weird and everyone feels uncomfortable and you just want to go home. At least Ubisoft has the decency to pretend Rayman doesn't exist anymore, you know?

If I sound upset, it's because I am. I, like so many of us, covet a new Splinter Cell. That's why, when Ubisoft's latest string of announcements ended last night without so much as a hint of Splinter Cell, the disappointment and memes flowed freely.

Will we ever see a new Splinter Cell? I just don't know anymore. With each passing no-show, I think it becomes clearer to Ubisoft just how much we all want to see Sam Fisher return in his own game, so maybe the company is building up to it. Then again, I've been waiting seven years for a new Rayman game, so what the hell do I know?
