Ryan Reynolds Sends Mortal Kombat Fans Into Frenzy With Johnny Cage Tease

It's fair to say that Mortal Kombat fans have very much settled on the idea of Ryan Reynolds as Johnny Cage. The recently released Simon McQuoid-directed reboot is packed with fan-favourite fighters, but the cocksure Cage was a notable absence. They have to hold something back for the inevitable sequel, I guess.

Sure enough, the action movie star/deadly martial artist is teased at the end of Mortal Kombat, heavily suggesting that he'll be a part of any future plans Warner Bros. has for the franchise on the big screen. This got the fans talking about who they'd love to see in the role, and Reynolds' name came up more often than not. I mean, who wouldn't want to see Reynolds go head to head with the likes of Joe Taslim's Sub-Zero?

We recently interviewed Taslim about which gaming icons he could murder, btw. Check it out below!

Reynolds is fairly active on social media, and soon caught wind of the fan campaign to have him cast as Cage.

In a strange move, Reynolds took the opportunity to tease fans with a gif of himself as the iconic Mortal Kombat fighter, while also advertising Mint Mobile. As you can see below, the apparent ad features Reynolds as Cage having beaten "Big Wireless" on behalf of Mint.

Weird, but I guess if you can cash in on your name trending by adding fuel to the fire, you may as well. Also he's subtly implanted the idea of himself as Johnny Cage in the minds of all of his followers, sneaky mf.

Mortal Kombat writer Greg Russo recently outlined plans for an entire trilogy, so a sequel is looking highly likely, if not yet officially confirmed.

Reynolds should be aware that he's not the only actor eyeing up the Cage role, though. WWE superstar Michael "The Miz" Mizanin recently made it clear on Twitter, that he wants the part - and it's hard to argue that he doesn't look like a perfect fit for it. The only way to sort this out is to get Reynolds and Mizanin to dress as Johnny Cage and fight to the death. Seems fair, right?
