Russell Crowe Is Playing A Major Character In 'Thor: Love And Thunder'

This is a “fun cameo” of the character.

Russell Crowe will be playing Zeus in the upcoming Marvel movie Thor: Love and Thunder, the next chapter in the character's story after the destruction of Asgard and impact of the Infinity War on the universe.

It was spotted that the Australian actor and director had snagged a role in the movie in late March, though the character that he'd be playing was kept hush-hush. All that we knew was that it would be a "fun cameo" and was originally intended to be a total surprise for fans, however, photos of Crowe chilling out on set with the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder were posted to the internet and that was that. An attempt was made, at least. Speaking in an interview on JOY Breakfast with The Murphys, the actor lifted the lid on working with Marvel Studios and announced his role in a hilarious way.

"I'm gonna get on my bicycle. I'm gonna ride up to Disney Fox Studios, and around about 9:15, I shall be Zeus!" he said, and you can hear he's barely able to contain his glee as the hosts congratulate him. "It's for Thor. It's my last day of Zeus-ing about and I'm going to enjoy it." Taika Waititi, the director of Thor: Ragnarok, has been brought back for Thor: Love and Thunder and so I'm sure that this cameo scene will be an absolute cracker. If you've not gotten round Ragnarok yet (there are a tonne of Marvel movies and TV shows after all), it's a twist on the Marvel movie formula that adds much more humour and irreverence than the earlier entries into the series.

The cast for Love and Thunder is enviable: Chris Hemsworth is Thor, Tessa Thompson is playing Valkyrie, and Natalie Portman is Jane Foster. In the movie, Jane is undergoing cancer treatment, and will eventually become the Mighty Thor and share similar powers to Thor. The Guardians of the Galaxy will pop up, with Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Karen Gillan as Nebula and Sean Gunn as Kraglin Obfonteri. Christian Bale will be playing Gorr the God Butcher - and if it wasn't obvious by the name, he's the villain of the movie. Matt Damon is even reprising his role from Ragnarok, too, and if you didn't spot him before, his character is ... a little unconventional.
